Hey there all stutters and everyone interested in stuttering! I mailed Brett Carr, the man behind the story, director, and lead character of the movie "Revoloution". It' a movie about how a violent, street fighting, extreme stutter becomes a powerful communicator.
I have seen the movie a couple of times since I ordered it, and it's a beatiful movie. And I wanted to find out more about what was his inspiration behind this movie. So I asked him for an interview. And fortunately, he said yes.
Brett also invited all member of this site, and readers, to mail him at bret@revoloutionmovie.com if he can help you in some way.
Anyway, Here's the interview:
What was your inspiration to the making of revoloution? i was knocked back to when my mom, who was a germ freak, had the janitor kill our bird cause he got out of the cage.. i cried for hours and then a new age regressionist made me go through that scene so many times that i laughed at it by the end... they forced me through stages of loss that remain unresolved and stay in the body's musculature or whatever - bottom line is birds don't restimulate bad memories - and i don't feel like i have to be safely locked up to get the love i never got as a kid... whatever your metaphor is, unresolved emotions create stories that we live out... when i realized this, i had to give back...and the movie allows people to see their stories... that's why the writer of five time oscar winner , the deer hunter, wrote the movie for me.
What do you enjoy the most about making movies? only being on set with other talented passionate creators - and spirit or if you want to call it, "the zone", takes over and starts utilizing the best of you to create magic in the moment - it's like a high octane meditation... the ultimate train set for storytellers is what making a film is... but it's spiritual - it's a modern substitue for the campfire at the village. Do you think it is important for someone who stutters, to accept, and feel comfortable with the stutter? what you bring present can dissapear and dry in the sun what you hide from remains compulsive and will destroy you.. so says gospel of john - i actually believe that RevoLOUTion can turn you onto the emotions you need to cathart to be able to re-pattern the brain circuits and muscles that cause stuttering... that's why the movie angers many and delights many. no wonder the critics attacked it, while magazines like awareness, and thought leaders, pro-active people like shiva rae the worlds most famous yoga teacher, oprah author gay hendricks, jane fonda, etc. endorsed it... Did you get inspiration from the lead character Lou from any special person? lou is a metaphor for what used to be my anger and repeating patterns. Can you tell something about that person?
Do you have any tips for someone who stutters?
Was there any specific message you wanted to spread out with the movie Revoloution? yes, at the time it was that any severe emotional state can be overcome IS A SIMPLER TECHNOLOGY THAT YOU CAN USE ALONE OFF THE WEB AND IT'S FREE. So, the movie is a story at the end of the day - but a parable that we don't have to relive the drama of our childhoods over and over again, trying to change the ending to the story always. even to the point of dis-easing our bodies, getting cancer from anger, kidney problems from not feeling good enough, etc. Do you think it is important to forget the past and to "look forward"? if you can YES, if you can't check out the movie and use the link http://www.emofree.com/Do you think anyone, who's unhappy with his or her life, can have an instant tranceformation, just like Lou had in the movie? 100% - try the Emotional Freedom Techinique - EFT in the link above or watch the movie just for fun to watch the journey of one man doing just that. stories ring emotionally true because we instinctively know those journeys are metaphorically happening to us... that is why the movie works for some - and upsets others. was from a guy who raised his hand in the theatre at a question and answer with me and said, "i hated the movie, i didn't get it, but i sat here... (silence) - i looked at this guy and wanted to be polite - so i said thank you for shar... then he interupted and said, "and then i started to cry... it was an excellent movie..' i have this guy on video on my youtube page and i'm repeating it, cause that was the essence of the experiment - revoloution was meant to be a 'revolutionary road' for movie goers brains - and the revolution i'm speaking of was we laced the movie with trigger so that audiences could experience a rite of passage which is missing from society today - revoloution's revolution is what i believe is a movie first - a film designed to be a motion picture rite of passage. A story following the transformation of a man, his revolutionary road, so to speak, told moment to moment as he figures out his way out of his head and into his heart. this story created by quinn (deer hunter writer) and myself is one which, if i never make another film, i will always be proud of cause i did something unique and gave my all to make a contribution, and shared what worked for me. i'm still looking for a way to get this movie out there - and maybe this sycnronistic email from you is a message to do it through the stuttering community, or toastmasters for that matter. i invite your members and readers to let me know what i can do to help. bret@revoloutionmovie.comDo you have any tips for the one who's unhappy with his/her life? watch revoloution, watch a film called 'my life', giving to others is a great way out of your head, volunteer, do some eft http://www.emofree.com/ and create balance of physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual play in your life. if nothing else become a work out fiend and start screaming in the streets the words i love myself, or get it out, or forget about till something happens. those are just some ideas! Why did you start making movies? Was there any particular person or type of movies that inspired you? i was lonely and bossy and traumatized and liked train sets. i saw appocalypse now which i wouldn't even watch today... but realized if something can make me feel and go through someone's life like that - WOW! i had to be a story teller. i'm going back to school to art center now, cause i'm so inspired by michael bay's visual style. I saw him direct his first videos at propoganda and used to hang out on the set, but i didn't have money to go to school and was too ignorant to realize you could learn to make an image more dynamic and learn about different planes of framing and use those frames to create the excitement the eye wants... like a foreground object crossing a center frame with a background plane also creating intrigue - that is where the eye goes... spielberg uses color matching alot -foregrounds and backgrounds... etc. i've kinda figured this stuff out from breaking down michael and spielbergs work, but art center i'm sure will elucidate a whole new set of tools. acting too, was a big inspiration as that really got me out of my head and i did it as much as therapy as to meet girls and be a better storyteller. so inspiring me on that level -props must go to the guy who branded the excercises that most great actors train with to develop thier muscles and that guy is sanford meisner, no longer in a body.
so thanks for asking these questions, i really appreciated the opportunity to get some of this stuff off my chest in a clearer manner than i was able to during the trial release of the movie. perhaps one day i'll be able to get it distributed!
best, bret carr If you're interested in or want to get the movie, check out revoloutionmovie.com or check out debugyourbrain.com
